It was enabled for Release, Beta, and Aurora channels by accident for a bit before being made specific for Nightly channel currently. The software update message yesterday for Mac users was a unintended hiccup as it was intended only for the Nightly development channel where 49.0 is currently on as 49.0a1. I'm also not sure from reading the map whether 45.7.0 will be compatible with 10.6.8. It seems to me that I should switch to 45 ESR now and install the point releases as they become available, but I'm wondering if this is correct. The latest update, though, states that version 45 is the version that's going on ESR, and the map in the FAQ suggests that 45 is the ESR release through v52, which will also "become" (?) ESR 45.7.0. So I presume that installing 46.0.1 won't break anything at this point, although I can only look for new releases until sometime in August. That would be consistent, as I just learned, with this update. Today Software Update reported that 46.0.1 is available for download, and carried the usual "strongly recommended that you apply this update" admonishment. My intention was to move to 45 ESR while figuring out whether I have a viable "upgrade" (the term's applicability is debatable) path to. That would be consistent with this post and this one. Incidentally, you can still find the macOS software on the Mac App Store.Yesterday I got a Software Update message to the effect that there was a new version of Firefox out (46) but my OS (OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard) was too old to use it. One of the benefits of this is that your Mac can be set to automatically download the latest updates and install them, keeping your Mac up-to-date with minimum effort on your part. Now operating system updates come in via Software Updates which is either located in System Settings > General > Software Update or in System Preferences > Software Update (pre-Ventura). However, that changed with Mojave, which arrived in 2018. Since the arrival of the Mac App Store in 2011 (as an update to Snow Leopard) versions of Mac OS X and macOS have been available to download via the Mac App Store. Very old versions of Mac OS X came on a disk and any security updates came via Software Update. If you want to update your Mac to a newer version of macOS the method will be determined by the version of macOS you are running. It’s easy to find out which version of macOS is running on a Mac.įoundry How to install the latest version of macOS If you want to install the latest beta of macOS read about joining Apple’s beta program.
